Developers reject Old Hospital ‘standstill’

Developers of the old Mount Gambier hospital site have refuted allegations that the new development was at a standstill, claiming demolition of the building may start as early as next month.

Adelaide based developer Colin Boots said construction drawings were in the process of being drawn up and following sub-division approval, demolition may start in February. Read more

Derelict hospital becomes tourist drawcard

Mount Gambier’s old hospital has long been considered an eyesore across the city, but ironically it has become a tourism drawcard, according to nearby residents.

“Tourists stop and take photos at weekends and if you are out they ask how long the building has been the way it is and why something hasn’t been done — they can’t believe it,” one resident said. Read more

Green light for serviced apartments

Mount Gambier City Council planning assessors have given the green light for the old hospital to be redeveloped into serviced apartments.

Plans revised for old hospital site

Mount Gambier is set to attract its first multi-million-dollar serviced apartment complex following the developers of the old hospital changing the intended use of their proposed multi-storey “skytower”.

Site developer Boots and Partners confirmed yesterday they had secured a national operator to run the 41 serviced apartments complex, which would include an in-house café. Read more

Developers of the old hospital site claim the $20m project is still on track, but concede the apartments and penthouses will not be advertised for sale until the “economy picked up”.

Council retreats from appeal fight

Mount Gambier City Council will not engage lawyers to defend any appeal lodged against the old Mount Gambier hospital development, if an appeal is lodged.

At Wednesday night’s full council meeting, Cr John Kyrimis tabled a motion without notice in a bid to save council costs if an appeal was lodged against the decision of its Development Assessment Panel (DAP). Read more

Mount Gambier City Council’s planning assessors narrowly approved the $20m development application for the old hospital site on Wednesday night, despite tensions running high at the meeting.

With developers anxiously sitting in the chamber, Development Assessment Panel member Tony Pasin quickly moved a motion to have the development — which included two multi-storey skytowers and a retirement village — rejected. Read more
