Parking requested in Heriot Street

Mount Gambier City Council will introduce new no-parking zones along Heriot Street East to improve road safety.

This follows concerns about the narrowness of the street.

A no-stopping zone will apply from the southern side of Heriot Street from the intersection with Ferrers Street to 80 metres west of the intersection.

This new zone will apply at all times.

Motorbike parking bays discussed

Mount Gambier City Council has rejected a request by a Commercial Street East business to install a number of motorcycle-only parking bays.

This follows a request by business Bike Bling.

But council will explore the possibility of implementing motorcycle parking bays in other parts of the city.

Hospital parking quagmire worsens

Mount Gambier residents are continuing to show frustration over the lack of carparking spaces at the city’s hospital, following reports of cars becoming bogged there last week.

Drivers are being forced to park on muddy grass or squeeze into non-carparking areas around the busy hospital grounds. Read more

City centre parking concerns raised

Businesses near Mount Gambier’s Uniting Church hall have voiced concerns development of a 97-room aged care facility at the site will create traffic chaos.

City Council’s development assessment panel approved the project last week, including demolition of the hall and tennis courts to create the two-storey centre. Read more

Car parking set to expand

The first stage of the new Sturt Street carpark is expected to be open soon to help alleviate the shortage sparked by the construction of the multi-million-dollar new public library.

Council has already opened the Ferrers Street carpark to the public to open up public spaces.

The Sturt Street car park will create 58 new spaces.

Parking restricted in Victoria Terrace

Mount Gambier City Council will impose new parking restrictions on Victoria Terrace following complaints by residents who live near the city’s bowling club.

Parking will be restricted adjacent the bowling club on the east side of Victoria Terrace.

The restrictions will apply to all hours and appropriate signs will be installed.

Council staff lose car parking

Mount Gambier Mayor Steve Perryman has stripped council staff of their car parks to allow space for public parking during development of the city’s new library.

A Mount Gambier City Council committee has recommended that council staff should find alternative parking to free up spaces at the Civic Centre’s Ferrers Street carpark.

Free parking on railway lands

Motorists are being urged to park on the railway lands if they cannot find space because of the new multi-million-dollar library development.

Mount Gambier City Council operational services director Daryl Sexton said the public could park in the idle rail corridor for free while council made alternative spaces available. Read more
