Biomass pellet plant in limbo

The construction of the $30m biomass pellet plant near Mount Gambier is in limbo following a number of residents appealing the decision through the court system.

Proposed to be the first pellet plant of its kind in South Australia and only the second in Australia, the plant is expected to manufacture 250,000 tonnes of pellets per year by using forest residue for the export market. Read more

Green light for wood pellet mill

Grant District Council’s independent planning assessors have given the green light to the $25m industrial wood pellet plant near Mount Gambier.

It was the second time council’s Development Assessment Panel had deliberated over the Wandilo Forest Road application, which was lodged by Plantation Energy Australia. Read more

Company warns pellet plant at risk

The proponents of the $30m wood pellet plant near Mount Gambier are hoping the development will receive the green light next month so work on the Wandilo site can start within weeks.

But Plantation Energy Australia spokesperson Jarrod Waring yesterday warned the project could be delayed for 12 months or even “jeopardised” if the site for the development was rejected. Read more

Wood pellet plant application lodged

Plantation Energy Australia has lodged a development application with Grant District Council to build a $25m wood pellet processing plant at Wandilo.

The plant, which will export environmentally friendly wood pellets to the European domestic market, is expected to create 15 full-time jobs, along with spin-off employment for the region’s transport and service industries. Read more

Pellet mill fuels employment hopes

The Mount Gambier district is poised to become a major exporter and world leader in the manufacturing of wood pellets, following a biomass fuel company securing an Australian-first multi-million dollar export deal to Europe.

The announcement of the $70m deal with a Belgian power company will be a significant boost for the South East’s $1b forestry industry as it struggles through one of the largest downturns in memory. Read more
