Gas production ramps up

Memorial bike ride grows in stature

About 50 people took part in a memorial pushbike ride on Saturday to celebrate the life of Penola man, Danny Coote, who passed away two years ago.
The riders set off on the road from Penola to Kalangadoo on the second anniversary of Mr Coote’s demise, retracing the route he rode many times after cycling became his hobby several years before he died. Read more
Sainthood imminent for our Mary

Penola’s Mary MacKillop is likely to be canonised next year.
Pope Benedict XVI has approved a decree recognising a second miracle attributed to the intercession of Blessed Mary.
The approval means Blessed Mary is likely to be formally declared a saint at a canonisation ceremony next year. Read more
Bypass affirmed, subject to court

The Penola bypass could finally become a reality after Wattle Range Council decided at a special meeting on Tuesday night to move forward with plans for a western route.
Councillors passed the motion, which is subject to the outcome of the Supreme Court action taken against the council by the Penola and District Residents and Ratepayers Association, 10 – 1 after it was moved by Cr Rob Dycer at the special meeting in Penola. Read more
Wattle Range pool openings delayed

Season openings for swimming facilities at Millicent, Nangwarry and Penola will be staggered to allow for upgrade works.
Seal repairs are needed on the floor of the Millicent Swimming Lakes and two new shade structures will also be added at the site. Read more
Fired at Penola

Penola’s Gallery 54 is showcasing the work of Mount Gambier artist Kate Czaban in the Fired display.
The exhibition is a snapshot of fire in our lives, from its devastating impact when wild through to its use as a tool when tamed.
In her photographs on canvas, Kate explores the destructive nature of fire through symbolic colours. Read more
Penola pool upgrade planned

The Penola swimming pool complex is set to undergo $270,000 worth of major improvments in time for its opening in late November.
Wattle Range Council committed the money to the project in its 2009-10 budget, with the upgrades to include the pool shell, chlorination system pipelines and changerooms. Read more
MacKillop centenary celebrations a success

Penola and Mount Gambier were at the centre of national celebrations to mark the weekend’s centenary of the death of Blessed Mary MacKillop with church services, art exhibitions and an orchestral work premiere.
Six hundred school students converged on Penola’s Rymill Hall on Friday to mark the occasion, with Mary MacKillop Memorial School, Tenison Woods College and Edenhope’s St Malachy’s, Millicent’s St Anthony’s and Coleraine and Casterton’s Sacred Heart schools taking part. Read more
Penola bypass back on agenda

Wattle Range Council will hold a special council meeting in Penola this month to consider a report on the various options for a Penola bypass.
Chief executive Frank Brennan has prepared the report after council decided to back away from its previous plans to divert trucks from the town’s main street when the development was challenged in the Supreme Court. Read more
Fourteen Koreans injured in bus crash

Fourteen Korean workers had a brush with death on Wednesday afternoon when their bus left the Robe-Penola Road and smashed into a tree.
Two occupants were thrown from the Toyota mini bus about 20km west of Penola, just before 5pm.
Eight people were conveyed to Mount Gambier Hospital and six to Penola Hospital for treatment. Read more
