Williams returns to political storm

Mitch Williams stepped into a political storm on Thursday, August 5, as the member for MacKillop made his first visit to tornado-stricken Penola, following criticism in the media over his absence.

Mr Williams was attending the Darwin Cup race meeting at the time of the disaster on a Liberal Party trip that also involved meetings with representatives of the Northern Territory fishing and mining industries. Read more

Tornado leaves trail of destruction

Stretching 50 metres wide and three kilometres long, Saturday night’s tornado in Penola left a devastating trail of destruction along its narrow path.

Green light for Penola bypass

The proposed $12m Penola bypass road could soon begin to take shape after the Supreme Court found in favour of Wattle Range Council on Wednesday.

Plans for a bypass and heavy vehicle road have divided the community for many years, but the issue came to a head when the Penola and District Residents and Ratepayers Association and resident Duan Butler took the council to the Supreme Court over the most recent proposal. Read more

Power project steams ahead

SOUTH Australian Premier Mike Rann stated last week the geothermal well near Penola would soon attract international interest as he visited the region to watch the first production of steam at the site.

Mr Rann visited the Panax Geothermal Salamander 1 well site with Senator Don Farrell as part of a one-day South East tour that also included a stop at the Mary MacKillop Penola Centre and meeting with Wattle Range Council chief executive Frank Brennan and mayor Mark Braes. Read more

Arts festival hailed success

The 2010 Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival has been declared one of the best ever held after a packed weekend of events and exhibitions for all ages.

Around 5000 people visited the town for the four-day festival, which included the illumination of four buildings in the town with coloured images and animation, a Renee Geyer concert on Friday night, the judging of the highly acclaimed John Shaw Neilson art prize and a memorable performance from the Deaf Can Dance group. Police car written off in crash

A Penola police officer ploughed his vehicle into the wall of a limestone building in Penola at the weekend.

The officer had finished duty around 2am Saturday morning, but was sent to an incident several hours later, according to Limestone Coast Superintendent Trevor Twilley. Read more

Dol De Lago wins cup in front of record crowd

A RECORD Easter Sunday crowd at Penola saw the veteran Mount Gambier mare Dol De Lago upstage better credentialled rivals to win the 2010 $18,000 Penola Cup.

One of the outsiders of the 11 horse field, Dol De Lago gave owner/trainer Ricky Bruhn a rare local cup victory and was the second leg of a winning double for Adelaide apprentice Amy Herrmann. Read more

Gas production ramps up
