Redmond flags talks with independents

A leading political analyst claimed yesterday the outcome of the state election in the seat of Mount Gambier was “too hard to call” and foreshadowed the major parties could have to strike deals with independents to form government.

Associate Professor Clement Macintyre, from the University of Adelaide, said polls showing a swing to the Liberal Party in Adelaide indicated there was a looming scenario of a possible cliffhanger. Read more

Democrats to contest Upper House

Animal rights activist Jeanie Walker has been chosen as the Democrats candidate for the Legislative Council for the March 2010 state election.

Ms Walker is particularly known for her activism against rodeos.

Labor eyes Mount Gambier success

The Australian Labor Party yesterday warned its political rivals in the seat of Mount Gambier that it was planning to run the best possible candidate in next year’s state election.

While a candidate will not be announced for a few weeks, Labor has declared the race for the seat is now wide open because of the looming retirement of independent MP Rory McEwen. Read more

Family First to contest Mount Gambier

The Family First party will announce its candidate for Mount Gambier this weekend.

Family First MLCs Dennis Hood and Robert Brokenshire will be visiting the region and plan to announce the party’s candidate for the March election.

“We’ve been appalled at this Government’s neglect of services and infrastructure in country South Australia, which is why we support equity in services and infrastructure for regions like the South East, which goes far beyond others’ royalties for regions policies,” they said.

Secker slams Turnbull over ETS

The South East’s representative in Federal parliament has told The Border Watch that as internal battles unfold over emissions trading he has found for the first time in his life he has been unable to support the leader of the Liberal Party.

Independent says Libs were spooked

Opposition leader Isobel Redmond has announced a State Liberal Government would invest 25pc of South Australia’s mining royalties into the Regional Development Infrastructure Fund if elected in 2010.

Ms Redmond said this would amount to more than $40m per year to secure infrastructure and creates jobs in regional South Australia and could rise to almost $50m by 2013. Read more

A “disparate bunch” is the phrase Professor Dean Jaensch coined to describe the unlikely alliance of regional independent MPs and Nationals minister Karlene Maywald who are seeking to win the balance of power at next year’s state election.

Dirty tricks claim in scone-gate affair

Independent Member for Mount Gambier Rory McEwen yesterday lambasted the Opposition for claiming he had wasted taxpayers’ money on two expensive bottles of wine and labelled it a “dirty tricks campaign” to get Liberal candidate Steve Perryman over the line.

“If all that they can come up with is two bottles of wine and half a scone in five years while I was a minister, then good lord that is just ridiculous — they are just grasping at straws,” Mr McEwen told The Border Watch. Read more
