Williams returns to political storm

Mitch Williams stepped into a political storm on Thursday, August 5, as the member for MacKillop made his first visit to tornado-stricken Penola, following criticism in the media over his absence.

Mr Williams was attending the Darwin Cup race meeting at the time of the disaster on a Liberal Party trip that also involved meetings with representatives of the Northern Territory fishing and mining industries. Read more

Federal election ballot drawn

Five candidates for the seat of Barker were officially confirmed by the Australian Electoral Commission on Friday, with a surprise nomination from the Climate Sceptics’ Steven Davies.

Welfare payments anger

A Mount Gambier welfare organisation has claimed a proposal by the Federal Government to quarantine welfare payments to curb spending on alcohol and gambling  discriminates against welfare recipients.

The Federal Government is set to expand its compulsory income management policy beyond the Northern Territory on a national scale to all welfare recipients in disadvantaged areas, including in the South East, where Tarpeena, Nangwarry and Mount Burr have been identified as disadvantaged areas by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

City bus service saved

THE State Government has announced the Mount Gambier City Bus Service will continue to operate at its current levels following mounting fears the service could be scaled back.

The current contract — operated by McCormicks Bus Service — was due to expire on June 30 and the government had given no guarantee to the community regarding its long-term future. Read more

Small businesses raise tax reform concerns

A Mount Gambier business leader has raised concerns that the proposed hike in compulsory employer superannuation contributions will hurt small businesses that are the “backbone” of the economy.

Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce president Lynette Martin said the rise in superannuation from 9pc to 12pc would add further pain to small businesses.

New MP pushes for water plan
