Wives of Port MacDonnell commercial cray fishermen anticipate tough financial times in the next few months with detrimental effects to families and business in the face of a shorter fishing season and a lower commercial catch quota.

The group of women said fishing families would have to tighten their belts drastically, deckhands would lose their jobs and fishermen would be exposed to more danger at sea when the season starts in November. Read more

THE South East is sitting on a green and smelly “goldmine of potential” biofuel, according to researchers and experts in the field.

Piles of seaweed, which wash up on the shores from Port MacDonnell to Beachport and beyond, causing grief to locals along the coast disturbed by the pungent stench, could be used to create hundreds of jobs, generate billions of dollars and reduce Australia’s carbon footprint while leaving the beaches clean. Fishers call for lobster season cut

Representativesof the local rock lobster fishing industry are hopeful of a shorter 2010-11 season with reduced quotas after this year’s season ended at an all-time low for some.

Port MacDonnell Professional Fisherman’s Association president John Ashby said although efforts from fishermen were up this season, catches were down with boats hauling in just 6kg to 30kg per day, leaving the sector a predicted 100 to 150 tonnes short of its 1400 tonne total allowable commercial catch quota this season. Cemetery expansion fight

Grant District Council has lashed out at a suggestion the Port MacDonnell Cemetery be expanded onto the car park at the site to leave an area of vegetation on the facility’s fringe untouched.

Councillors have rejected a proposal by the Native Vegetation Council to use the existing car park for burials and relocate the parking area to the northern side of the cemetery.

“Over my dead body will people be buried in the car park,” Cr Alex Deak said in a council meeting on Monday. Read more

Community gym up and running

After three years and numerous attempts at securing grant funding, the Port MacDonnell community yesterday opened its own gym.

Port MacDonnell Netball Club president Janine Merrett has been a driving force behind the development and welcomed the official opening of the facility yesterday. Read more

Grant Council floats port plan

Grant District Council has floated establishing a council operated professional port authority at Port MacDonnell, which is home to the largest rock lobster fleet in the southern hemisphere.

While a feasibility study will need to be undertaken to investigate the viability of a port authority, the Department of Transport has given its initial support to the possible move. Read more

Council axes foreshore tree plan

Grant District Council has dumped a proposal to plant Norfolk Island pine trees along the Port MacDonnell foreshore and build a replica of a large-scale boat because of fears it would obstruct seaviews.

Council received a flurry of submissions calling for a plan to plant Norfolk Island pine trees to be axed after releasing bold conceptual plans for the redevelopment of the foreshore and Tenterden Reserve. Read more

Thousands flock to Bay celebration

COLD weather on Saturday did not deter thousands of people from flocking to Port MacDonnell to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the seaside town being officially proclaimed a port.

More than 80 colourful hand painted silage and hay bales scattered next to the road between Allendale East and Port MacDonnell welcomed visitors to the celebrations, which included a community street parade, a craft market and book fair, children’s rides and entertainment, food stalls and a vintage tractor pull. New hope to bury cemetery saga

Grant District Council is confident it can now finally bury the long-running saga over the expansion of the Port MacDonnell cemetery.

At council’s full meeting on Monday night, councillors were told it was likely the Native Vegetation Council would allow a small expansion at the site to meet the needs of the coastal community for the next 50 years. Read more
