Church moves to reclaim Valentine’s Day

The Catholic Church has moved to reclaim St Valentine’s Day in a campaign focusing on the historical meaning of the saint’s feast day and the importance of romance in marriage.

The national initiative, featured in an article in the February issue of The Southern Cross, provides parishes and Catholic school families with practical suggestions for celebrating St Valentine’s Day and encouraging married couples to spend more time together. Read more

MacKillop centenary celebrations a success

Penola and Mount Gambier were at the centre of national celebrations to mark the weekend’s centenary of the death of Blessed Mary MacKillop with church services, art exhibitions and an orchestral work premiere.

Six hundred school students converged on Penola’s Rymill Hall on Friday to mark the occasion, with Mary MacKillop Memorial School, Tenison Woods College and Edenhope’s St Malachy’s, Millicent’s St Anthony’s and Coleraine and Casterton’s Sacred Heart schools taking part. Read more

Lutheran Synod coming to Mt Gambier

Up to 400 delegates from Lutheran churches throughout South Australia and the Northern Territory will to gather in Mount Gambier next month for a convention.

Delegates from as far as Darwin and Alice Springs and all over South Australia will meet for the Lutheran Church’s annual district synod, which is to be held in Mount Gambier for the first time. Read more

Messiah coming to Mount Gambier

Melbourne’s Heidelberg Choral Society is taking Handel’s Messiah on the road for the first time in the choir’s 88-year history.

Mount Gambier’s St Paul’s Roman Catholic Church is on the schedule for the regional tour of Victoria and South Australia, with the sounds of the choir and Amadeus Chamber Orchestra to reverberate through the majestic building next week. Read more

As I observe the realities of life now, I consider that of my dad. A product of the Great Depression, it moulded the rest of his life, as it did so many.

Thrift and caution became his guiding lights (and in later life, faith in God.) Waste was to be avoided like the plague. Lights were to be turned off when not in use. The phone was there to be used as little as possible. Read more
