Independent says Libs were spooked

Opposition leader Isobel Redmond has announced a State Liberal Government would invest 25pc of South Australia’s mining royalties into the Regional Development Infrastructure Fund if elected in 2010.

Ms Redmond said this would amount to more than $40m per year to secure infrastructure and creates jobs in regional South Australia and could rise to almost $50m by 2013. Read more

Dirty tricks claim in scone-gate affair

Independent Member for Mount Gambier Rory McEwen yesterday lambasted the Opposition for claiming he had wasted taxpayers’ money on two expensive bottles of wine and labelled it a “dirty tricks campaign” to get Liberal candidate Steve Perryman over the line.

“If all that they can come up with is two bottles of wine and half a scone in five years while I was a minister, then good lord that is just ridiculous — they are just grasping at straws,” Mr McEwen told The Border Watch. Read more

Mount Gambier Liberal candidate Steve Perryman opened a rift between himself and Independent parliamentarian Rory McEwen yesterday when he slammed the incumbent MP’s service to the area.

McEwen proves a pumpkin heavyweight

The city’s heavyweights were on full display at the inaugural Community Garden giant pumpkin competition on Saturday.

Giants of the vegetable world gathered at the Old Gaol to find out who had the biggest.

Local MP Rory McEwen won the $100 first prize for his 83.05kg pumpkin, which weighed in 11.3kg more than the nearest rival. Read more

McEwen resigns from Cabinet

The Independent Member for Mount Gambier, Rory McEwen, has resigned from Premier Mike Rann’s Labor-dominated Cabinet.

Mr McEwen was the Minister for Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and Regional Development.

Perryman seeks assurance on forestry sale

Mount Gambier mayor and Liberal candidate for Mount Gambier, Steve Perryman, has called on Labor Government Forestry Minister Rory McEwen to provide assurance the proposed upfront sale of three rotations of ForestrySA plantations is in the best interests of the region.

When comment was sought from Mr McEwen, he voiced disappointment about being asked to respond, stating “of course I will put the interests of the region first” and said The Border Watch should read the mid-year budget review, rather than call him. Read more
