Grazier reaches out of court settlement

South East grazier Thomas Brinkworth has settled an indemnity claim against the RSPCA out of court following his acquittal of animal cruelty charges after a botched investigation into the mistreatment of livestock.

In a hearing earlier this month, the Adelaide Magistrates Court heard Mr Brinkworth would continue to assert compensation claims “well above” the Magistrates Court scale of costs and what the charity was willing to pay. Read more

RSPCA seizes 200 sheep from Keith property

The RSPCA seized more than 200 sheep on Wednesday from a property at Keith in the largest seizure of its kind in South Australia’s history.

The sheep, many suffering from flystrike and a variety of other health issues, have not been shorn in months and their wool is extremely overgrown, according to an RSPCA spokesperson. Read more

Man fined for pony’s suffering

A Port MacDonnell man charged with failing to mitigate the advanced suffering of an elderly pony was convicted and fined $2000 at the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Kevin Smith pleaded guilty to charges levelled by the RSPCA last year after authorities discovered the grey pony was inflicted with cancer of the penis. Read more

RSPCA creates approved farming scheme

Producers and licensees can now apply to be part of the new RSPCA “Approved Farming Scheme”, a program endorsing welfare-friendly egg and pork production.

It replaces the former RSPCA accreditation scheme and covers eggs and pork that have been produced to the RSPCA’s high animal welfare standards. Read more

RSPCA investigates cruelty allegations

A horse with a cancerous and flystruck penis near Mount Gambier has been destroyed by the RSPCA.

RSPCA operations manager Ben Johns said alleged maltreatment of the horse was now the subject of an investigation. Read more
