Agribusiness award entries open

Entries have opened for the 2010 NAB Agribusiness Awards for Excellence, with companies and individuals working in the agribusiness, food, fibre and beverage sectors encouraged to enter.
Ten categories will recognise excellence, innovation and leadership across all areas of agribusiness, including an agribusiness leader of the year award, primary producer of the year award, export award, innovation in new and emerging industries award, technology and innovation award, environment and energy management, rural enterprise award, agribusiness employer of choice award, risk management award and governance award. Minister urged to review drought decision

Federal Agriculture Minister Tony Bourke is being called on to review his decision not to extend drought assistance for the Lower South East.
The Lower South East is the only pocket in South Australia and Victoria which has been excluded from drought assistance. Read more
Susi Tegen named Rural Woman of the Year

Susi Tegen from Furner has been named South Australia’s Rural Woman of the Year.
Ms Tegen and her husband David own a mixed beef, sheep and cropping operation, and utilise their university education by working off farm. Read more
Rural address scheme on the way

South East rural properties will have new addresses by April 2010 in a distance-based scheme that will make locating houses more efficient, particularly for emergency services.
A quick response is vital in emergencies, but many properties are on unnamed roads, requiring the property owner to rely on local knowledge and reference points when describing the location to emergency personnel. Read more
Farmers concerned about carbon trading

The impact of carbon trading on farmers is developing into the single biggest issue in the history of Australian agriculture, according to a state spokesman for the sector.
Kalangadoo grazier and South Australian Farmers Federation board member Kent Martin said it was not just the potential for tax-break “carbon sink forests” to compete for prime agricultural land and water that was of concern. Read more
Mount Gambier Elders jobs safe

No job losses are expected at Elders in Mount Gambier, despite the rural giant announcing 350 positions will be shed in Adelaide under a major restructuring plan.
Elders Rural Services managing director Mike Guerin told The Border Watch the company wanted to remove the top heavy administration in Adelaide and pour more resources into regional areas. Read more
Cropping budget tool developed

The Advisory Board of Agriculture has developed a new simple tool for grain growers to work out their cost of production and profitability on farm.
The electronic spreadsheet enables farmers to enter their cost of production figures and calculate automatically their target net farm gate price. Read more
South East farm debts highest in state

Farmers in the South East carry debts of up to $4m and have the highest average debts of the state’s Rural Financial Counselling Service clients.
But service general manager Kay Matthias was unable to say what the average farm debt in the region was. Read more
Farmers feel financial pressure

About 250 South East family farmers are clients of the SA Rural Financial Counselling Service, 7pc more than last year.
On the back of drought farmers are struggling against the doubling of fertiliser and fuel costs, high interest rates and an ever increasing raft of government levies, fees, licences, charges and council rates. Read more
