Tragedy sparks cliff danger alert

Grant District Council officers yesterday inspected the site of this week’s tragic fatal cliff fall at Cape Douglas to determine whether action was needed to secure the area.

A Victorian tourist, 30, plunged to her death on Tuesday, April 27,  after she lost her footing while taking photographs at a cliff face, 25km south west of Mount Gambier. Read more

Libs promise Wireless Road traffic lights

The Liberal Party has promised to install traffic lights at the Wireless Road/Penola Road intersection in Mount Gambier if it wins the March 20 election.

New rest areas for Dukes Highway

Safety on the Dukes Highway is to be further improved following the start of construction on four new rest areas and the upgrade of three existing rest areas, part of a $6.6 million project to upgrade conditions on the Dukes highway.

The Tolmer Group of Companies has won the $2.6 million contract to undertake the construction works between Tailem Bend and the Victorian border. Read more

The South East is the state’s hotspot for collisions between motor vehicles and wildlife, according to insurance data.

SGIC has revealed the company processed 43 claims for animal-related car damage last year in Mount Gambier alone. Read more

Road safety initiative extended

A new road safety initiative, which has already successfully prevented six potential head-on crashes, is being considered for introduction on sections of the Duke’s Highway.

Road Safety Minister, Michael O’Brien, said wire rope barriers were installed last year along the centre of Port Wakefield Road under a $2 million road safety program. Read more

South Australian road toll climbs

The state’s horror road toll jumped again at the weekend when a South East truck driver died after hitting a tree on the Riddoch Highway 32km north of Naracoorte.

The 56-year-old Mount Burr man was killed in the early hours of Saturday, taking the number of deaths on South Australia roads to 20 for the year so far, compared with six at the same time in 2009. Read more

Firefighter health warning

As firefighters fought a hay blaze in trying conditions with heat over 39 degrees and wind gusts of 72kmh on Wednesday, a first aider warned volunteers to take care as the threat of more fires increases with the onset of summer.

Port MacDonnell community emergency response team leader Denise Gower assisted ambulance personnel at the scene to protect the wellbeing of firefighters, offering water, refreshments, oxygen and space to rest away from the smoke and heat. Read more

Dukes Highway upgrades completed

A package of safety upgrades at key locations along the Dukes Highway has been completed in time for the summer holidays.

Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese said overtaking lanes near Tailem Bend, Ki-Ki, Culburra and Tintinara have been extended, and a rest area two kilometres west of Culburra upgraded. Read more

Transport safety officers moved on

The South East Regional Road Safety Steering Group is “disturbed” over the State Government’s move to slash the number of transport safety compliance officers.

It is understood 10 safety officer positions have now been scrapped at Adelaide and Murray Bridge and the number in the South East reduced from four to two. Read more
