Vickery appointed new SELGA leader

Following a vote which was never counted, Tatiara Council Mayor Richard Vickery was appointed South East Local Government Association (SELGA) president on Friday.
The uncounted vote for president was between Mr Vickery and Naracoorte Lucindale deputy mayor David Hood.
Former president, Mount Gambier Mayor Steve Perryman announced last December he was stepping down from the position. Read more
Local government chief visits region

Australian Local Government Association president Geoff Lake will address the region’s mayors at the SELGA annual meeting in Naracoorte tomorrow.
Cr Lake was Victoria’s youngest ever mayor with Monash Council at the age of 22.
The association represents 562 councils across Australia.
A new SELGA president will be elected tomorrow after Mount Gambier mayor Steve Perryman signalled he would step down.
Backflip on tourism admin job

Pressure from South East Local Government authorities has forced the South Australia Tourism Commission to backflip on a controversial decision to transfer an administrative job to Adelaide.
This follows some Mount Gambier City Councillors expressing outrage over the plan and a move by the South East’s peak local government body to seek legal advice on the move. Read more
New regional organisation considered

High-level discussions are taking place which could see state and federal regional development organisations merged to create a new entity.
Federal parliamentary secretary Gary Gray has written to state Regional Development Minister Rory McEwen outlining a proposal to align the former Area Consultative Committee with the Limestone Coast Regional Development Board. Read more
Council concern at tourism job shift

The region’s peak local government body will seek legal advice over the South Australian Tourism Commission’s decision to transfer a position to Adelaide and review staffing roles at the region’s award-winning tourism organisation.
The issue sparked a growing backlash by Mount Gambier City Council members on Tuesday night, who expressed frustration over the number of bureaucratic jobs being transferred to Adelaide. Read more
Transparency push rejected

Employees and staff of the Limestone Coast Regional Development Board will not be required to fill out a register of interest, or declare “real or potential conflicts of interest”, similar to councils.
A push for development board “transparency and accountability” was rejected by Mount Gambier City, Grant, Wattle Range, Kingston and Tatiara councils during a South East Local Government Association (SELGA) meeting on Friday. Read more
‘Expanded comment’ rejected

Motions, who moved and seconded them and whether or not they were carried are the only things which should be recorded in meeting minutes, according to Wattle Range Mayor Mark Braes.
Speaking at a South East Local Government Association’s (SELGA’s) Kingston meeting, Mr Braes said the “commentary or summary of discussion is not helpful” in meeting minutes.
Mr Braes cited a passage from SELGA’s previous meeting minutes which referred to him “expressing anxiety” about a road safety initiative. Read more
