Mount Gambier TAFE services assured

Further Education Minister Michael O’Brien has reassured the Mount Gambier community that its TAFE campus will not be downsized and the restructuring process that caused some unrest at the facility was over.

During a two-day whistlestop tour of Mount Gambier and the Lower South East yesterday, Mr O’Brien said the government wanted to continue to expand the learning opportunities. Read more

‘Trade Olympics’ medals presented

South East “tradie” Ben Hooper took out dual gold in fitting and turning categories when medals were presented on Friday night at TAFE SA’s Mount Gambier campus for the region’s Worldskills Australia competition.

Dubbed the “Olympics for Tradies”, the South East event featured 13 categories, ranging from welding to hairdressing and information technology, run across the region from June to October. Read more

National saw doctor training chopped

Mount Gambier TAFE SA has axed its national saw doctoring program, which has been delivered in the Blue Lake City for more than 30 years.

Considered a major setback for TAFE SA’s Mount Gamier campus and the region’s $1b timber industry, the saw doctoring program will cease in March. Read more

Mount Gambier develops learning focus

Work has begun to ensure Mount Gambier can cope with the attraction of up to 150 students per year from outside the region, including overseas.

Tenison Woods College is already at the forefront of attracting students, particularly from China and Taiwan, but the trend is expected to broaden over the coming years as capacity increases at TAFE and university campuses. Read more

148pc increase in TAFE applications

Mount Gambier’s TAFE SA campus has recorded a 148pc jump in the number of mid-year applications from potential students, particularly in the areas of aged care, enrolled nursing and beauty therapy.

This comes in the wake of the campus receiving a $4m funding boost from the Federal Government for infrastructure programs at the Wireless Road site. Read more

Employment, Training and Further Education Minister Michael O’Brien today announced a $4 million upgrade of Mount Gambier’s TAFE SA facilities yesterday.

“Two new workshops will be fitted out at the Mount Gambier campus to support the heavy vehicle, carpentry and joinery industries, providing more training and associated employment opportunities in the South East,” Mr O’Brien said. Read more

An angry Mount Gambier TAFE worker has raised fresh allegations the State Government is beginning to cut employment contracts at the facility as part of a move to significantly slash operating costs.

While senior management positions are earmarked to be cut under a major restructure, it is understood a number of staff on contracts are now facing the unemployment queue. Read more
