Carter Holt Harvey sheds 130 jobs

The South East was left reeling today after 130 jobs were cut at Nangwarry’s Carter Holt Harvey plywood manufacturing plant.
Today’s announcement means just 30 workers will remain at the mill, which once employed hundreds of people.
The news comes after 90 positions were cut at the plywood plant in April last year following the shedding of 130 jobs by the company in 2008 when it closed the Dartmoor mill. Read more
Machinery giant expects recovery

Komatsu Forest had expected to supply $32m worth of harvest machinery to Timbercorp over the coming four years for the looming bluegum harvest in its biggest Australian deal.

Minister rules out stockpiling logs

Stockpiling until the economy recovers is not an option for around 100,000 tonnes of ForestrySA timber set for export, according to Forestry Minister Paul Caica.
The Border Watch asked Mr Caica during his visit to the South East last week whether putting sale of the wood on hold would end a debate with the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union, which claims the export would equate to 100 local jobs going overseas. Read more

Protavia examines Timbercorp assets

Penola Pulp Mill proponent Protavia says it is actively examining the Timbercorp forestry assets in conjunction with other interested parties.
“We are focused on structuring a proposal to deliver an acceptable outcome for growers and to keep the Timbercorp forest estate and existing workforce together,” Penola Pulp Mill project director John Roche said.
“The investor growers need to be assured that a realistic plan is in place to allow the trees to continue growing until they are ready for harvest and commercial arrangements must ensure that the growers’ interests are protected when the trees are harvested. Read more
