Signs point to tourism neglect

Grant District Council may have to face the bill to replace deteriorating Mary MacKillip tourist drive signs in its council area, or risk them being permanently removed.

The South Australian Tourism Commission (SATC) has knocked back a request by council to replace the tourist drive signs as it has focused on supporting signage closer to the Mary MacKillop Interpretative Centre in Penola. Read more

Expansion planned at heritage site

THE Piccaninnie Ponds Conservation Park may be expanded by another 310 hectares if the State Government approves a proposal by the Department of Heritage and Environment (DEH).

Outlining the proposal at a Grant District Council meeting on Monday, May 17th, DEH Lower South East district ranger Ross Anderson said the expansion would enhance the park’s importance as a conservation and tourist area. Read more

Thousands flock to Bay celebration

COLD weather on Saturday did not deter thousands of people from flocking to Port MacDonnell to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the seaside town being officially proclaimed a port.

More than 80 colourful hand painted silage and hay bales scattered next to the road between Allendale East and Port MacDonnell welcomed visitors to the celebrations, which included a community street parade, a craft market and book fair, children’s rides and entertainment, food stalls and a vintage tractor pull. New bus depot planned for Lady Nelson

Mount Gambier City Council members have flagged the Lady Nelson Visitor and Discovery Centre site could become the permanent location for a new undercover bus shelter.

At a major committee meeting on Tuesday night, councillors threw their support behind a proposal to build a new bus depot facility at the Jubilee Highway East site. Read more

Greater Mount Gambier Tourism has a new leadership and direction, with a focus on increasing the region’s presence at trade shows among its aims.

Lucas Seebohm was elected the new chairman about a month ago as part of a committee blending new and existing members that will focus on increasing visitor numbers and building opportunities for the tourism sector to expand and develop. Read more
