‘Trade Olympics’ medals presented

South East “tradie” Ben Hooper took out dual gold in fitting and turning categories when medals were presented on Friday night at TAFE SA’s Mount Gambier campus for the region’s Worldskills Australia competition.

Dubbed the “Olympics for Tradies”, the South East event featured 13 categories, ranging from welding to hairdressing and information technology, run across the region from June to October. Read more

Aviation school proposed for airport

Grant District Council has lodged a $2.4m funding application with the Federal Government to build an aviation trade school at the Mount Gambier Airport.

The application, lodged on Friday, has gained the support of surrounding councils and Mount Gambier district schools.

Council chief executive Russell Peate said such a facility had the potential to provide significant spin-offs and growth opportunities for the region. Read more
