Almost 120 school-based apprentices have already signed up to be part of the Limestone Coast Trade School for the Future, where new facilities were opened on Wednesday.

New forestry training initiative

A Commonwealth initiative will fund 48 timber industry-related qualifications within the region.
The recent funding announcement is the result of a ForestrySA funding submission, which was completed with industry support to benefit the broader sector.
As a result of the collaborative approach, almost $290,000 was secured for training in identified skill-shortage areas from the Federal Government’s Productivity Places Program for Existing Workers. Read more
Taskforce examines teacher shortage

A new State Government taskforce may help overcome the ongoing challenge of recruiting and retaining appropriate teachers for Mount Gambier’s schools as a regional shortage looms.
However, key issues in resolving the situation may be left to the Industrial Relations Commission, which is continuing a hearing this week in Adelaide after a two-year stalemate in enterprise bargaining for the state’s teachers. Read more

Mount Gambier TAFE SA has axed its national saw doctoring program, which has been delivered in the Blue Lake City for more than 30 years.
Considered a major setback for TAFE SA’s Mount Gamier campus and the region’s $1b timber industry, the saw doctoring program will cease in March. Read more

At least 600 unemployed people in the Limestone Coast will benefit from almost $380,000 in funding over the next year to boost skills training.
Employment Minister Michael O’Brien has announced the funding under South Australia Works, the State Government’s program offering skills training to unemployed people in areas of local industry demand. Read more
$2.5m trade centre proposed for CBD
