Bushfire defence boost for Nelson

Nelson’s bushfire defences have received a major boost with the opening of a $200,000 multi-purpose facility and the handover of a new $92,000 two-seater tanker.

Member for Western Victoria, Gayle Tierney, opened the facility and handed over the keys to the two-seater tanker on Sunday. Read more

Nelson identified as being at risk

Victorian Premier John Brumby has named Nelson among 52 towns considered to be facing a significant fire risk this summer.

In detailing the government’s strategy for the coming fire danger season, Mr Brumby said the 52 at-risk communities would have individual township protection plans developed – over and above standard municipal fire prevention plans. Read more

Record funding for health services

The Victorian Government today announced “record” funding allocations to hospitals and health services in the state’s western border areas.

Hamilton’s Western District Health was awarded $27.7m for this financial year and $17.4m will go to Portland District Health. Read more

New CMA board appointed

The Victorian Government has appointed new board members to the Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Management Authority (CMA).

“The skills and experience the board members bring to their new roles will help Victorians to reduce their ecological impact while ensuring community views on land, biodiversity, water resource and waterway priorities are effectively conveyed to government,” Environment and Climate Change Minister Gavin Jennings said. Baiting program targets foxes

Mount Richmond residents are being asked to assist a Glenelg Ark fox baiting program in a bid to reduce numbers.

The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) has begun contacting landholders adjoining public land to notify them of the program and to encourage their involvement. Read more

Suspicious fire continues to burn

A fierce blaze was continuing to burn yesterday in the Lower Glenelg National Park as temperatures climbed, causing smoke haze over a wide area, including Mount Gambier.

Investigators were treating the fire, which had destroyed 6000ha near Mount Richmond, as suspicious. Read more

Skills training for retrenched workers

Redundant Dartmoor mill workers will receive up to $214,000 worth of training after Western Victoria MLC Gayle Tierney announced a package of Victorian Government assistance.

Ms Tierney said training through the “Skill up” program would help workers retrenched by Carter Holt Harvey to secure new occupations. Read more

New National Park near Portland

The Wilderness Society has congratulated the Victorian Government on passing legislation that protects the 27,000 hectare Cobboboonee Forest in new National and Forest Parks near Portland.
