It is official — the South East is one of the happiest regions in Australia to live.

According to a new snapshot of 180 regions across Australia, people living in the South East are happier than those living in inner city metropolitan areas.

The Australian Unity Wellbeing Index shows Warrnambool/Portland on top the list, followed by the Upper South East at number two on the national survey. Read more

Free hugs will be given to Centro Plaza shoppers on Tuesday as part of Mental Health Week.

Ewan Grant from radio 5SE, Ray DeWitt from the Pioneers and WIN TV’s Sharni McLean will all be at the centre from noon to give away free hugs, promoting the importance of what a hug means — especially to those who do not have anyone to hug. Read more

Wellbeing focus for Mental Health Week

The message that mental health is everyone’s responsibility, will be promoted in the South East next week as part of national Mental Health Week.

South East Mental Health Week committee member Sarah Lynne said Mental Health Week from October 5 – 11 was about getting everyone to ask themselves what they did to maintain wellbeing. Read more

Support for anxiety disorders

A program to support people suffering anxiety disorders will be held throughout the South East.

“A Great Step Forward” is run by the Anxiety Disorders Association South East (ADASE), an association formed more than 13 years ago to help anxiety disorder sufferers and their carers with education and self-help management workshops. Read more

Suicide Prevention Day

World Suicide Prevention Day is held annually on September 10 to develop suicide awareness as a preventable cause of death on a global, national and local level.

This year’s theme “Think Globally, Plan Nationally, Act Locally”, highlights the fact that about one million people die in the world each year by suicide and in Australia, at least one person suicides every five hours. Read more
