Safety warning when whale watching

Whale watching season is here and the Department for Environment and Heritage (DEH) and South Australian Whale Centre remind the public to keep a safe distance when observing these mammals.

Humpback whale may need help

A humpback whale that became entangled in fishing gear is now missing off the South East coast.

The South Australian Department for Environment and Heritage (DEH) is calling on fishermen to report any possible sighting.

Dr Deb Kelly said the whale was last seen on Thursday, July 16 off the coast of Portland, heading in a westerly direction and travelling at 15kmh towards South Australia. Read more

First whales observed at Beachport

The annual whale-watching season began at Beachport last week with numerous sightings.

At least one whale was seen near the town’s famous jetty for an hour on Monday.

In the afternoon, a pod of four was seen off the “Salmon Hole”. They were believed to be two mothers with their calves. Read more

A giant sperm whale was washed ashore at Nelson.

The carcase of a giant sperm whale washed up at a Nelson beach is attracting interest not just from rangers and spectators, but a four-metre white shark which has been seen in the area. Read more
