Pulp mill in chip supply talks

The new owner of Timbercorp’s bluegum estate has entered discussions with Protavia to supply woodchips for the $1.5b Penola Pulp Mill.

Speculation had been rife that the Timbercorp collapse would mark the end of the major infrastructure project, which was left without the resource agreement needed to secure development of the approved project. Read more

Bluegum focus turns to exports

Hopes to secure the $1.5b Penola Pulp Mill could be lost if the consortium led by developer Protavia does not end up at the top of the list of bidders for Timbercorp’s forestry assets this week.

Port of Portland chief executive Scott Paterson told The Border Watch at Friday’s opening of the Myamyn chip mill that activity in the bluegum sector was moving toward export of chips to Japan and beyond into China and Asia. Read more

Woodchip export price maintained

The bluegum sector has received a welcome boost with negotiations securing maintenance of the existing export price for Australian plantation hardwood.

Port of Portland chief executive Scott Paterson said a price drop had been expected due to “supply and demand issues” in the current economic climate. Read more

Bluegum exports expected to fall

Tasmanian timber giant Gunns, which acquired Auspine last year, has publicly confirmed the economic downturn will lead to cuts to Australian bluegum exports.

“Discussions with customers in the Japanese market have indicated an expectation of continuing reductions in activity in paper production in line with lower activity in the Japanese economy,” company secretary Wayne Chapman said in a statement to the Australian Securities Exchange this week. Call to end native forest logging rejected

The Federal Government has rejected calls by a leading academic to give priority to plantations for hardwood exports, rather than allow continuing harvests from native bushland to dominate the market.

Dr Judith Ajani, a postdoctoral fellow at Canberra’s Australian National University, told The Border Watch last week the economic downturn would hit exports hard. Read more

The Federal Government should intervene to stop native forests being exported as woodchips at the expense of the Green Triangle’s hardwood plantation estate, according to a leading academic.

Global crisis hits forestry sector

ABARE’s Australian Forest and Wood Products Statistics Report, released yesterday, showed a 5pc growth in the nation’s forest exports to $2.5b for 2007-08, driven by woodchip export growth. Read more

Woodchip export value grows

The value of Australia’s forest product exports rose significantly in 2007-08, growing by 5pc over the year to reach $2.5 billion, driven by woodchip export growth and to a lesser extent growth in recovered paper exports.

However, many exporters struggled with the high Australian dollar and softening demand for some products, results from ABARE’s Australian Forest and Wood Products Statistics report show. Read more

Port and Auspine celebrate milestone

Leading forest products company Auspine and the Port of Portland today marked a significant milestone in their relationship – the export of 10 million tonnes of woodchips.
