Coonawarra wine and the Blessed Mary MacKillop will be at the forefront of Australia Day celebrations at the Vatican next year.

Australia’s Ambassador to the Holy See, former deputy Prime Minister Tim Fischer, will promote the region at his official January 26 celebrations on the left bank of the Tiber River, just near St Peter’s Basilica. Read more

The Scottish Government created a furore last week when it released Lockerbie bomber Abdul Baset Ali al-Megrahi.

While serving a life sentence for his role in the death of 270 people in the terrorist attack on a passenger jet in 1988, Megrahi was sent back to Libya on compassionate grounds as he has terminal cancer. Read more

Family endures Mumbai terror scare

A Mount Burr grandmother has told of her grandson’s terror as he huddled in the dark in a locked restaurant for more than nine hours with about 30 people as gunfire, rockets and grenades exploded around him in the besieged Indian city of Mumbai.

Ria Lewis told The Border Watch yesterday that she had been terrified to learn her grandson Isaac Zalme, 25, was in the epicentre of last week’s chaotic and bloody scenes that rocked India’s financial capital. Read more
