Union boycott

TRADE unions fighting for lower raw log prices have promised no end to a string of protests following a demonstration outside the South East Forestry Roundtable meeting yesterday morning.

Members of the forward sale advisory body were greeted by around 20 shouting protesters demanding that ForestrySA negotiate with timber giant Carter Holt Harvey (CHH) to lower the price of raw softwood logs.

The small crowd made up mainly of Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) members handed a letter to roundtable chairperson Trevor Smith as he arrived, calling on the roundtable to push Adelaide for a “fair” log price.

The meeting was held inside employment agency Gramac Solutions and the irony was not lost on CHH union delegates, who warned they would be back at the premises seeking help to find new jobs if their demands were not met.
