Wide road causes lane-splitting confusion

CONFUSION surrounding some of Mount Gambier's busiest intersections continues to cause varied behaviour among motorists.

The introduction of dedicated right hand turn lanes along Bay Road at the Commercial and Sturt streets signalised intersections have caused some uncertainty about how to legally use the remaining wide lane.

It is understood the five metre wide lane was originally introduced to cater for mooted bike lanes along the major road before the State Government backflipped on the concept.

A South Australian Police spokesperson this week confirmed the wide lanes are treated technically as a single vehicle lane, encouraging motorists to use it as such.
