PRACTICAL TRAINING: Mount Gambier's retained Metropolitan FIre Service firefighters ready to execute a door entry procedure during practical training this week.

THE city's retained Metropolitan Fire Service firefighters were put through their paces recently as they battled purposely lit blazes in shipping containers.

Mount Gambier's old recycling depot on Eucalypt Drive was transformed into a makeshift training facility on Tuesday night, with a demonstration burn inside two adjoining shipping containers replicating a structural fire.

Firefighters watched the fire develop inside the containers and were trained in the application of water to maintain the safest possible conditions.

Previously only available to firefighters in metropolitan Adelaide, Limestone Coast MFS regional commander Mark Searcy said the training would now be delivered to departments in regional centres across the state.
