A TRUCK driver has escaped serious injury after his vehicle left the highway and crashed into a drain near Beachport on Friday morning.

Police were called to the Southern Ports Highway about 11.30am after reports a refrigerated truck had crashed into Drain M on the western side of the road.

The driver, a 37-year-old man from the inner Adelaide suburb of Blair Athol, was not injured in the crash but was taken to the Millicent and District Hospital for observation.

Following the removal of the damaged truck from Drain M, steps were taken to prevent the spread of diesel fuel from polluting Lake George which is downstream.
